Dog Medicine: How My Dog Saved Me from Myself by Julie Barton is such an honest memoir about depression that it can leave you feeling a little uncomfortable at times. She really puts herself out there with this book, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for that. Despite the pup on the cover and the book title, I don’t think you need to be a dog person to get something out of Julie’s story. I only just started reading it so I haven’t even reached the point where Julie and Bunker meet, but I already understand the deep love she has for her dog. I can’t even talk about my dearly departed dog without welling up, despite the fact that I’ve been without him for over ten years now. I’m assuming Dog Medicine will make me cry numerous times before I’m done reading it, but I’m totally okay with that.
