Joan Didion is fascinating, isn’t she? This article in The Atlantic puts it well: Didion is “famous in a way that writers seldom are anymore.” I’ve only just started reading her work but I already want to learn everything I can about her. I’m starting with Tracy Daugherty’s The Last Love Song, which is the first full-length bio (700+ pages) ever published on Joan Didion. The book covers a lot of ground but it feels a bit detached to me, like I’m still not getting a close look at Didion but rather a far off glance, maybe even from a moving car. She’s still an enigma. But maybe it’s better that way.
