I am officially a big fan of James M. Cain. I first read his novel Mildred Pierce after seeing the mini-series and loved it. Then I read Double Indemnity and now I’m almost done with The Postman Always Rings Twice. It was first published in 1934 when Cain was 42, which might seem old to some but was just right for him:
“Actually, the strange thing is that novels aren’t written by young guys. I was saying that before. You have to wait for your mind to catch up with whatever it is it’s working on; then you can write a novel.”
Even if you don’t like detective or crime novels, do yourself a favour and read something, anything, by James M. Cain. You won’t regret it.
