While I was reading Practical Magic last year, I heard talk of Alice Hoffman’s prequel, The Rules of Magic. Even though I prefer the movie version of Practical Magic, I did enjoy the book, so I was excited to start reading The Rules of Magic when I picked up a copy from the library earlier this week. You don’t need to know anything about Practical Magic to enjoy this book, although you’ll probably get a little more out of it if you’re already a fan of the story. I’ve since added some Alice Hoffman books to my to-read list, because I love her writing style and would be curious to read a few of her other popular books, like The Dovekeepers and The Museum of Extraordinary Things. It might seem weird to be reading a book about witches and magic so close to Christmas, but I’ll be honest, I’m not really in the mood for Christmas this year. I don’t know what it is. I haven’t watched any Christmas movies or done any Christmas baking. Maybe when I’m done with this book I’ll move on to something that will make me feel a little less Scrooge-like.
