Every year around this time I read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I started doing this a few years ago when I realized that for all the different movie versions I’d seen, I had never read the original story. The novella is incredible and worth reading if you love the movie versions as much as I do. I’ve said before that A Christmas Carol is one of the greatest stories ever told, and I completely stand by that.
Here are my top 3 movie versions of the Dickens classic:
1. Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) – 1951
This one stars Alastair Sim as Scrooge and I think he is the best at this role. Pure perfection.
2. Scrooged – (1988)
I’m a sucker for anything Bill Murray related so the fact that this is on my list is really no surprise. He is hilarious as a modern version of Scrooge (“Have you tried staples?”) and the score is by Danny Elfman. Amazing.
3. Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
I kind of grew up watching this so it is one of my favourites for nostalgic reasons. I mean, come on, Scrooge McDuck? How can you not love that?
