ABC Life Literacy Canada is a non-profit on a mission that I really support:
We inspire Canadians to increase their literacy skills.
According to their website about nine million adult Canadians struggle with low literacy. While the majority of people with literacy issues can read, they might not be at the level required for them to be fully engaged in their work and life activities.
It’s a problem that doesn’t get much attention even though it affects so many.
In addition to Adult and Workplace Literacy, ABC Life Literacy Canada also focus on the importance of Family Literacy:
By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities, parents are actively keeping their own skills sharp while at the same time strengthening the relationship between the family which, in turn, encourages lifelong learning.
They offer up some activities to get the whole family involved, including storytelling tips from the legendary Robert Munsch.
Through various programs and initiatives ABC Life Literacy Canada hopes to carry out their vision where every Canadian “has the literacy skills they need to live a fully engaged life.”
