While most couples will fall pregnant within a year of trying, it can be harder for some than it is for others. If you’re trying to get pregnant, there are a few ways that you can enhance your fertility through diet. Here are some that were shared with us by a fertility evaluation clinic.
Consume Whole Foods
Whole foods are those that are either partially, or completely unprocessed. They are rich in antioxidants, minerals and fibre which nourishes the body and improves fertility. The antioxidants help protect cells, including egg and sperm cells while healthy fats assist with the production of necessary reproductive hormones. Examples are fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains (such as brown rice and barley), nuts, beans, fish, shellfish, and eggs. Below are a few specific foods to include in your diet.
Greek Yogurt and Cheese
Both contain calcium, probiotics, and vitamin D which can help with ovulation and regulating your cycle.
Raspberries, Blueberries, and Strawberries
These berries are packed with natural antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory which can help both men and women enhance their fertility.
Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds are easy to incorporate into your diet. They are rich in vitamin E which help maintain proper sperm levels and improve mobility.
Avocados
Another food worth mentioning are avocados. They contain vitamin K, potassium and folate and healthy fats that help improve vitamin absorption and hormone regulation.
In addition to consuming the right nutrients, you should also consider improving your BMI (basal metabolic index). If too high or too low, women can experience difficulties trying to conceive as it can interfere with hormones and thus the ability to ovulate. For men on the other hand, sperm count is affected. Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns and would like help getting to a healthy range.
