While carrying my copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn around the other day, someone stopped to ask me what it was about. All I could think to say was that it’s about a girl growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1900s. I could tell that it wasn’t the action-packed description she was hoping for, but I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to describe Betty Smith’s classic novel. I have loved reading this book, so much so that I found myself putting it to the side so that I wouldn’t finish it so quickly. Francie is a character that I wish I knew, and the world that Smith created is one that I won’t ever forget.
What are you reading?
P.S. I bought and absolutely love Harper Perennial’s Olive Edition of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
