After watching the documentary Salinger last week, I immediately went out and bought myself Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction. I’ve owned The Catcher in the Rye since high school and it is very well worn. I was tempted to replace it but I kind of like the look of it, all tattered and covered in coffee stains. I found the Salinger documentary incredibly interesting, even though it’s based more on speculation than on actual facts. The New York Times had this to say in their not-so-positive review: “Salinger moved to the woods of New Hampshire partly to escape the intrusions and indignities of American celebrity culture. “Salinger” is that culture’s revenge.” Still, the documentary made me want to read everything Salinger wrote, so I’m starting with Nine Stories this week.
