I’m not sure how I’ve gone this long without hearing about Marion Roach Smith’s The Memoir Project. I started reading it earlier today and I liked it, maybe even loved it, from the very first page. In her introduction entitled “Required Reading”, Marion talks about that thing that happens sometimes when you tell someone you’re a writer. You know that thing when someone tells you that they’ve always wanted to write and plan to do it when they retire. Her reaction to hearing this is very similar to my own: “Nodding, I’d wish him the best with it and slink off to find the canapés, wondering what was wrong with me that I was going to devote my whole life to writing, when clearly people who were smarter than I could put it off until they got around to it.” Brilliant. This is exactly the kind of book I want to end the year with.
