<p>I’ve been a fan of John Hughes ever since I first watched <em>Sixteen Candles</em> when I was a kid. I’ll tell anyone who will listen how amazing (most of) his movies are and how underappreciated he is as a filmmaker. But I never really thought about John Hughes as a writer until I read the book <strong><em>You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and their impact on a generation</em></strong> by Susannah Gora.</p>
<p>Hughes could write an entire script in two days. He said that he felt like he was “inside the script”, it just flowed out of him. David Kamp wrote an excellent article for <em>Vanity Fair</em> entitled “Sweet Bard of Youth” where he said: “Writing was, for Hughes, not so much a profession as a condition of life. The thoughts that germinated in his brain took a direct path to his hands, which filled notebooks, floppy disks, and hard drives with screenplays, stories, sketches, and jokes.”</p>
<p>Even if you don’t like his movies (many people don’t), you have to admit that as a writer, John Hughes was pretty impressive…</p>

<li>John Hughes wrote the first draft of <em>The Breakfast Club</em> in his room while listening to music. It took about three days.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Hughes once sat in front of his computer for two days writing and when he finally got up he had herniated one of his discs from sitting there so long.</li>

<li>He wrote the last 44 pages of <em>Home Alone</em> in about eight hours.</li>
</ul>

<li>John Hughes wrote the first 50 pages of <em>Ferris Bueller’s Day Off</em> in one night. It started with a pretty simple idea: Guy takes a day off from school. He finished the rest of the script the very next night.</li>

<li>After the crazy success of <em>Home Alone</em>, John Hughes was making around $4.5 million per screenplay. And considering it only took him about a week to write a script, that’s not bad.</li>
</ul>
<p>Even though he disappeared from the Hollywood spotlight, his longtime collaborator Howard Deutch said that there was no way Hughes wasn’t still writing. “He always needs to write. He writes all the time. That’s what he is, a writer.” If John Hughes hadn’t passed away from a sudden heart attack in 2009, who knows what he’d be doing today.<br /> I guess the only thing we can be sure of is that Hughes would still be writing. Because that’s what he did.</p>
